Last week Wired Magazine selected Proteus’ ingestible microchip as one of its Top 10 technology breakthroughs of 2008
. In excellent company with such advances as flash memory, Speedo’s LZR swimsuits, Google’s Android mobile operating system, and Apple’s App Store, Wired’s editors noted that the ability to network the daily pill with embedded technology represents a groundbreaking advance that “will change our world in 2009 and beyond.”
This technology, which we call Raisin, has received a great deal of attention over the last month, starting with the selection of Proteus as a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum. WEF chose 34 companies from across the globe “that will have a deep impact on business and society.” The award led to some excellent press coverage which is a good source of information on this particular technology, but also an indicator of the increasingly high profile of intelligent medicine as an important new field of health innovation. See the articles in Business Week, Time Magazine, Wired and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Setting Sail to Save Lives
We are the Floating Doctors, a non-profit group of doctors and support workers about to embark on a 12-month medical relief voyage to Central America and the Eastern Pacific.
We will use green technology and practices to sail to the most remote and needy places on earth, and treat over 13,000 patients for free in the mobile tented clinics we will set up on shore, as well as conducting an international survey of medical care and making a documentary of our experiences to raise awareness of issues in global health.
We welcome any type of help, from local knowledge of our destinations to funding or equipment donations to joining us onboard. To find out more about us, please visit our website at http://www.floatingdoctors.com or email me at doctorben@floatingdoctors.com to see how you can help reduce the present and future burden of global disease.
We also greatly appreciate any suggestions on our website or project, so please visit us online and let us know what you think!
